DIAMOND had a strong presence at the Seventeenth Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium’s Annual Meeting (IAMC2024), held on November 4-6, 2024, at Yonsei University, South Korea.
Members from our consortium team presented 2 posters and 2 conference papers targeting the enhancement of state-of-the art IAMs and addressing key climate change mitigation and sustainability challenges, showcasing the two key contributions:
The OMNIA model: This open-source global model, based on the TIMES framework, is developed within the DIAMOND project by E4SMA and the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3). Our colleagues presented OMNIA’s full spectrum of novelties that expand its geographical scope (focusing on Europe), address its transparency, develop a new demand projection module, and improv the energy system sectors module.
TIMES-GEO Analysis of East and Southeast Asia: Originally developed by E4SMA and University College Cork (UCC), the TIMES-GEO model serves as the foundation for the OMNIA model. A model-based scenario analysis was shared to offer fresh insights into the energy strategies for the Asia region, demonstrating that while shifting away from gas in the power sector by 2030 might result in stranded assets, continuing long-term gas use increases transition costs.
Additionally, DIAMOND colleagues also had the opportunity to demonstrate the use of Climate, Land use, Energy, Water systems model (CLEWs) in Ethiopia, as well as methodological aspects to introduce multiple sustainability dimensions in IAMs to allocate mitigation efforts to economic sectors under uncertainty.
